Please use this simple self test to determine (in very general terms) where your house of worship may stand relating to risks your ministries’ may be facing.

1. Does your house of worship (HOW) perform and document background screening for all employees AND volunteers prior to “hiring” for criminal records, going back seven to ten years in all areas where the employee or volunteer lived?
2. Are your HOW drivers (employees and volunteers) screened for valid driver's license and driving record as well as adequate levels of car insurance if driving a personal non house of worship owned vehicle?
3. Does your house of worship know where all of the mechanical door or lock keys are located, know who has them, and documentation of same?
4. Does your house of worship have a documented, rehearsed, and posted fire evacuation plan and procedure for the various areas of your ministry with all volunteers and staff trained in the processes and procedures?
5. Does your house of worship have a “board” appointed and blessed, safety or security experienced person that is responsible for your house of worship safety operation activities?
6. Does your house of worship have emergency action plans for such situations as severe weather, disturbances, violence, fire and protocols for “two deep” in your infants, children's, youth, etc. ministries?
7. Does your organization regularly inspect buildings, roofs, doors and hardware, etc. for deficiencies to prevent slips, trips and falls, fires, water damage, break-ins, and so forth?
8. Does your house of worship have a documented medical ministry team, trained and scheduled for duty for medical response?
9. Has a safety and security survey or audit been performed at your HOW site/s in the past three years (includes parking lots, off site buildings or storage areas, lighting, etc.)?
10. Are your greeters, ushers, traffic and direction personnel, and other staff / volunteers trained in observation, recognition and prevention of potential issues and prepared to know what to do about what they see if they can not intervene?
